I think the main Windows XP administration tool is not mentioned here: Computer Management. It contains all the necessary things to monitor the computer performance. I understand that it’s mainly included for professionals but ordinary folks can play with it too.

P.S. On Vista, Computer Management is much more comprehensive and substantial – nice one, Microsoft!

I have an automatic defragmenter installed on my systems as i cant bother to manually defrag my large drives that continuously get fragmented. Its too time consuming to manually run the task and scheduling it hasnt worked always. I have installed a tool that tackles fragmentation as it occurs by running in idle time. The auto defrag feature can also be turned off if required.
