The Day of Doom (If Google went down..)

8 June 2008 301 views 18 Comments

Wow. Looks like there’s a tidal wave sweeping the web. First it was ThePlanet, then went Amazon and now, even adsense is down.. I wonder what will be next.. Google.com ?

If google itself went down, There would be chaos. People screaming on the streets, whole cities burning down because no-one can google the solution.. Looks like I Power’s prediction that the Internet will end by 2012 is coming true. In a terrible way.

We are all dependent of Google, even though we might not notice it. Most of us run several searches a day. When something’s wrong, Google is always there to help. But we don’t know how much we need it, until it’s gone. Gone for ever.

Just imagine: You are doing your daily search for vegetable recipies or “cool” flash games and type google.com into your browser. The page loads for several seconds and a blank screen appears. You refresh, but still nothing. The goosebumps are already forming… You try refreshing for one last time and a message appears in the centre of the screen, where you’re used to seeing the homely “Google Search” and “I’m Feeling Lucky” buttons..

Now you’re terrified. Keeping the sobbing to a minimum, you head over to Yahoo.com, just like the other 200 million Google users, all trying to get some info on what the hell’s going on.. How long do you think Yahoo will last with four times the normal 69 million visitors? Maybe an hour, maybe less.

With the fall of two of the web’s greatest search engines, the hordes of terrified and just plain curios people now unknowingly divide themselves into packs, each one moving from site to site, flooding them with visitors, clogging the servers and devouring the sites. All done without knowing.

These would be the next 10 sites to fall:

1. Youtube.com

2. Windows Live

3. MSN

4. Myspace

5. Facebook

5. Wikipedia

6. Blogger (along with all the blogs)

7. Baidu

8. Microsoft

9. AOL

Imagine that! The whole world will be left to wordpress blogs (like this one) and small, pointless websites, but their owners can’t turn the limitless traffic into money. Adsense is also down.

I have already faced this. Once some problem creped in with our ISPs servers and no GOOGLE’s service worked for full 48 hours.

    We were dead

no gmail no youtube no orkut no GOOGLE SEARCH

I know how my two days passed without the big G around

Now there’s an apocalyptic notion and a half!

I think I might be in danger of actually going outside, maybe even something drastic like taking my dog for a walk.

  • Eerik said:

    Woah, that’s bad! :D

  • mike said:

wouldn’t youtube go down at the beginning since google owns it?

  • Frank said:

While I agree this would be bad I believe your initial premise is wrong. Most users would simply try again later. Those in a rush would pick their alternative search engine. In my case – and many others – that would not be yahoo. So basically the other search engines might see a 25-50% increase in usage for a short while, but not 400% as in your example. And even if these other search engines would fall down, the majority of the users will again simply give up and try again later. Those addicted enough to still need to surf around will end up on so diverse sites that it would be called normal surfing, and thus not be an increase in traffic at all.

thats stupid. if the world survived so long without internet before it even exzisted wat makes u think we will all die when it goes down?

  • jamy015 said:

@fantaboy796: Because back then they didn’t have it. Now we do have it and are so used to it that we can’t live without it.

    Google is Down!!!
No luck with google.co.uk or google.com, maps seems to work and eventually got onto google mail. Lets see if the predictions are correct! PWJ

Update on previous mail: It appears that it is the Tiscali access to google that is at fault as my mate on a difference broadband provider is presently OK.

  • Pete Jefferson said:

False alarm. It was Tiscali Broadband’s access to Google that was at fault!
